Wildflower Meadow

In 1995, we decided to plant a mini meadow. Padraig turned the sod and then we covered the bed with newspaper and polythene. In Spring we went to Sandro for seed. We took up the polythene, raked the soil and planted the seed. No digging!!

In July, the meadow started to grow. This is how it looked when we came back to school.

The colourful flowers like poppies, marigolds and mayweed attract hoverflies and lacewings which in turn attract bats. The seeds of the grasses attract finches.

In 1996, we won a Gulbenkian award and as a prize, we visited Aras an Uachtarain, our President’s home, and met our President, Mary Robinson.
